Aligners

Home / Aligners

Aligners, like Invisalign and other clear aligner systems, are a popular modern orthodontic treatment designed to straighten teeth discreetly. These custom-made, clear plastic trays are worn over the teeth and gradually shift them into the desired position without the need for traditional braces.

How Aligners Work:

Aligners work by applying gentle, controlled pressure to teeth, guiding them into better alignment over time. Patients receive a series of aligners, each slightly different from the last, to progressively move the teeth into the correct position.

Steps in the Aligners Process:

  1. Consultation and Assessment:
    • The orthodontist or dentist evaluates your teeth to determine if aligners are a suitable option. Digital scans, X-rays, and impressions may be taken.
  2. Custom Design:
    • The dentist uses advanced 3D imaging software to map out the exact movements of your teeth. A series of aligners are then created based on this model.
  3. Wearing the Aligners:
    • Aligners are typically worn for 20-22 hours a day, removing them only for eating, drinking (except water), brushing, and flossing.
  4. Progression:
    • Every 1-2 weeks, you'll switch to the next aligner in the series, which continues the process of shifting your teeth. Each set of aligners is designed to move your teeth slightly further toward the desired position.
  5. Regular Checkups:
    • You’ll visit your dentist or orthodontist periodically to check on your progress and ensure everything is on track.
  6. Retention:
    • After treatment, you may need to wear a retainer to maintain the new position of your teeth and prevent them from shifting back.

Advantages of Aligners:

  1. Aesthetic Appeal:
    • Aligners are clear and virtually invisible, making them an excellent choice for adults and teenagers who prefer a more discreet option than traditional braces.
  2. Removability:
    • Aligners can be easily removed for eating, drinking, and cleaning your teeth. This allows for no food restrictions (as with braces) and easier oral hygiene maintenance.
  3. Comfort:
    • Aligners are made from smooth, flexible plastic, which is generally more comfortable than metal braces, as there are no wires or brackets that can irritate the gums and cheeks.
  4. Effective for Various Issues:
    • Aligners can treat mild to moderate cases of misalignment, crowding, spacing, overbite, underbite, and crossbite.

Limitations of Aligners:

  1. Not Suitable for All Cases:
    • Aligners are typically best for mild to moderate orthodontic issues. Severe cases of misalignment or bite issues may require traditional braces or other interventions.
  2. Discipline Required:
    • Aligners must be worn for the recommended 20-22 hours daily to be effective. Non-compliance can delay progress and extend treatment time.
  3. Cost:
    • Aligners are often more expensive than traditional braces, though the price varies depending on the complexity of the case and geographic location.

Common Clear Aligner Brands:

  • Invisalign: The most well-known aligner system, offering comprehensive treatment options for both adults and teens.
  • ClearCorrect: A more affordable alternative to Invisalign, also using clear aligners for mild to moderate orthodontic problems.
  • SureSmile: Offers both aligners and other orthodontic solutions, designed with advanced digital planning tools.
  • SmileDirectClub: A direct-to-consumer aligner option where treatment is managed remotely, often at a lower cost, though only for minor adjustments.

Treatment Duration:

  • The treatment time with aligners can vary depending on the severity of the dental issue, but it typically ranges from 6 to 18 months. More complex cases might take longer.

Benefits for Different Age Groups:

  • Adults: Many adults prefer aligners because they are less noticeable and do not interfere with professional or social life.
  • Teens: Clear aligners also have options like Invisalign Teen, which includes compliance indicators to ensure they are being worn for the required time.
